What Optimize iPhone Storage does to your photos
Learn how Optimize iPhone Storage differs from deleting photos, where to find the setting, and why cloud originals still need careful handling.

Optimize iPhone Storage lets iOS use space-saving local versions while full-resolution originals remain in iCloud Photos. It helps manage how a library occupies the device; it does not remove unwanted pictures or create an independent backup.
Optimization changes local storage, not the library’s meaning
Your library can contain pictures whose originals are held in iCloud while the phone uses smaller local representations. iOS manages that behavior as space is needed. You should not assume that every original is downloaded to the device simply because its thumbnail is visible.
That distinction matters if you plan an export, want to use the library offline or intend to turn off synchronization. Check the specific Apple instructions for that action before assuming the phone already contains a complete independent set of originals.
Find the Photos storage setting
Go to Settings → your name → iCloud → Photos, then review the options available for your library. Apple’s photo-storage guidance describes Optimize iPhone Storage and keeping originals on the device. Names and placement can vary by release and account state.
Read the available options before changing them. Retaining all originals locally and optimizing local usage have different capacity and connectivity implications. The phone still has a fixed physical capacity, while your iCloud account has its own quota.
Deletion still synchronizes
Optimization is not a local-only delete mode. Removing an item from a synchronized iCloud Photos library still affects iCloud and the other devices using that library. A smaller local version does not make the underlying library item independent.
If you need to keep an archive before cleanup, verify an independent copy. Do not use “it is in the cloud” as proof that a normal synced deletion will leave it untouched. See the iCloud deletion explanation before removing a large group.
Use cleanup for pictures you actually no longer need
Optimization and selective review serve different goals. The former manages local representations; the latter removes unwanted library items. You may want both, but each needs its own decision.
Pixtrim helps with the selective part. Review a month or a focused group, keep the useful photos, mark the extras and confirm the final selection. Do not expect the app to control exactly when iOS downloads, evicts or accounts for optimized media.
