iPhone storage and iCloud storage are different
Compare local iPhone capacity with iCloud quota, understand photo optimization and synced deletion, and choose the right response to a storage warning.

iPhone storage is the physical space on the device. iCloud storage is space in your Apple account’s cloud services. More of one does not automatically create more of the other.
Read the two storage screens separately
For the phone, open Settings → General → iPhone Storage. This shows local usage by categories and apps. For iCloud, open Settings → your name → iCloud and review the storage information there. That account quota is shared by supported iCloud services and is a separate measurement.
A warning about the phone can persist even when iCloud has room. A warning about iCloud can persist even if the phone has free local capacity. Use the relevant screen before choosing what to remove or whether to change a plan.
How photos connect the two
With iCloud Photos, the library synchronizes across connected devices. Optimize iPhone Storage can reduce the local footprint by using space-saving representations while originals are kept in iCloud. That links the services, but it does not make their quotas interchangeable.
If you retain originals locally, the phone must have enough room for the content it downloads. If you optimize, accessing an original may require downloading it. Neither choice turns a synced library into an independent backup.
Choose a response that matches the warning
| What you see | Useful next check | What a photo cleaner cannot do |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone storage is full | Inspect local categories and photo/video usage | Add physical storage or clear every system category |
| iCloud storage is full | Inspect iCloud services and quota usage | Supply additional cloud capacity |
| Photos occupy substantial local space | Review optimization and unwanted media | Guarantee an exact instant reduction |
Buying more iCloud storage can be a separate account decision. It is not the same as increasing the phone’s hardware capacity. Likewise, removing a local app’s downloaded content does not necessarily change iCloud Photos usage.
Understand what deletion changes
Delete a photo from an iCloud Photos library and the deletion can synchronize to iCloud and the other connected devices. If you need to keep the picture independently, preserve and verify that copy before removal.
Apple says Recently Deleted items do not count toward iCloud quota. Local storage behavior is a separate matter controlled by iOS. Do not treat permanent removal as a mandatory cloud-cleanup step or as a harmless way to make a number change.
Where Pixtrim is useful
Pixtrim helps review photo and video items you no longer want in the library. That can be relevant when media is a meaningful part of usage, but the app does not manage every category or provide cloud storage.
Choose a focused group—such as large videos or old screenshots—then review before confirming. If the warning points somewhere else, follow that category’s supported management options instead.
