iPhone storage full? Find the category before deleting photos

Read the iPhone storage breakdown, distinguish local space from iCloud, and choose a sensible photo, screenshot or large-video cleanup task.

Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage. Check which categories are taking space before deleting anything. Pixtrim can help review selected photo and video media; it does not clean System Data, remove malware or add physical storage.

Read the warning as a device-space problem

An iPhone’s local capacity is finite. iCloud is a separate service with a separate quota. Buying additional iCloud capacity does not physically expand the phone, and a phone can be full even when the account has room in the cloud.

Open the device storage screen and let its category view load. Review the recommendations and app list. If Photos is a small part of usage, starting with a photo purge can sacrifice useful memories while leaving the main problem untouched.

If Photos is large, choose a focused task

Large recordings can be useful candidates to inspect because a single file can be substantial. But “large” is not the same as “unwanted.” Check a clip’s contents, then preserve an independent copy if it matters.

Other manageable groups include old screenshots, detected duplicates and a month you remember. Pixtrim surfaces focused review tasks and supports swipe decisions. Start with a group you can understand rather than assuming a whole-library cleanup is necessary.

If the library matters, consider local optimization

Apple’s Optimize iPhone Storage can hold space-saving versions on the device while keeping full-resolution originals in iCloud. This is a storage-management choice, not deletion. It can be appropriate when you want to retain the synchronized library, provided you understand the cloud quota and network tradeoffs.

The setting does not guarantee a particular reduction at a particular moment. iOS manages local files. Read the optimization guide before treating a smaller local representation as an independent backup.

If another category is large, address that category

The storage screen may point to an app’s downloaded media, documents or other content rather than Photos. Review that app’s supported management controls and Apple’s recommendations. A photo cleaner is not a system-file cleaner.

Do not accept a claim that an ordinary media app can delete arbitrary iOS system data, increase hardware capacity or fix every full-storage warning. The useful question is which files or app content you actually no longer need.

Confirm what you removed and check again later

Read the deletion dialog and review the selected media before confirming. With iCloud Photos enabled, deleting synced media affects the cloud library too. Keep independent copies first.

After cleanup, return to iPhone Storage and allow time for its accounting to update. Pixtrim’s size figures are estimates, not a promise of instantly available gigabytes. If the device remains full, follow the category evidence and choose the next relevant task.
